On the back of his latest single, Home, American Singer Songwriter Liam Ross has just released his eagerly anticipated Debut EP, Reconstruct
Liam continues to make waves within the indie pop industry with singles like Hear You Talk, Can You Be My Friend, and Flown Away becoming popular through his teasing on TikTok, and now his Debut EP is sure to have some catchy tunes for you to enjoy this summer.
I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to sit down with Liam ahead of its release and chat all things music, his creative process, inspirations within the industry, and much more.
Initially, what was it about the music industry that attracted you to it?
I don’t think I was ever initially attracted to it, I think I just ended up in it because that’s what my passion has always been
Tell me about your creative process when writing songs
I do it two ways; I either start with guitar and hum melodies, then come up with lyrics that fit inside the melodies, OR I start with lyrics and melodies in my head with no music, and find the music that fits with it.
Growing up who were your musical inspirations and have they changed now that you're older?
Yeah, growing up my inspirations were classic rock like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, etc. nowadays I take inspiration from lots of different genres, right now I am really into this guy James Ivy, and a group called Moody Joody.
You started out in Over Atlantic before going out on your own, what was that transition like for you?
It was definitely scary. But I started doing my own solo things during COVID, so I had lots of time to really figure it all out and build up my confidence.
Your EP Reconstruct is out on Friday August 4th, tell me what is your favourite song off the EP?
My favorite song on the EP is the opener, “Home”. I think it’s my best work as a producer, but I think my best songwriting so far is actually the closer, “I Must Be Strong”.
I'd like you to pick any track from the record and explain the meaning behind it and what it means to you personally
“I Must Be Strong” has lots of hidden meanings in it. Or maybe they aren’t so hidden. I’m basically describing my breakup and relationship with somebody through metaphors of a tree
Is there a part of song-writing that you enjoy the most?
Hmmm, I think my favorite part of songwriting is when it first all hits me. Like I’ll get going on something, and I’m not sure yet if its going to be anything or not - then all of a sudden everything hits me all at once and the whole thing is just there in my head
What is the most exciting part of releasing the EP? Can we expect to see you touring this one in the future?
I would love to tour this EP, If I did - it would either start out in Washington, or Nashville
You've built a wide social media audience, what influence has this on your music?
I love to see what my fans think about the music, and they help me so much. It honestly keeps me going sometimes
The name of your EP is Reconstruct, is there a meaning behind this name or why did you chose it?
Yeah, I just thought Reconstruct was the word the really ties all the songs together. I wrote all of these songs during a period of my life that I had to put myself back together, in a new, healthier way
