Can you start by introducing yourself and your musical background?
I've always been surrounded by music growing up, from my Dad playing his New Order records, the sing song at every big family dinner or my diaries full of lyrics and poetry which I began when I was seven.
I did musical theatre as a child for about 6 years, where I knew the stage was my home but I always felt like I should've been singing my own story not portraying someone else's.
I played the classical Flute then for 6 grades which expanded my idea of theory, melody and rhythm. When I started my Bachelors in Pop Music in 2020, I just knew I was where I was meant to be.
I released my first single in 2021, Cntrl with my step brother Joe Keniry (also releases music under this name) who went by Raandal at the time. This inspired me to dive into the world of production so that one day I could be as self-efficient as possible and not have to use words to explain what I want but do it myself. I'm still learning but I always like to have a fully formed idea/product presented when I need mixing help or added production.
How would you define the genre you as an artist primarily identify with, and how do you incorporate other influences into your sound?
I'd have to say trip-hop and electronic pop are my main influences/the worlds I reside in. I think because they're all about experimenting which I really did for recording my upcoming EP. I like to incorporate "unconventional" sounds that wouldn't necessarily work together usually. A genre I like to splash into my work is punk I'm a pretty emotional girl lol, I like to rage and get angry and punk has an amazing power to pulse that angst throughout the sound. I want people to relate to me, I often feel crazy and punk is a very accepting genre in my opinion.
What are some of the challenges Irish artists face in today's music industry?
The lack of venues, resources and just the lack of the industry being here. It is slowly getting better thankfully to those paving the way. There's a huge sense of comradery in the Irish music scene we all know how tough it is, which is really special in a way.
How do you see the current state of the music scene in Ireland? Are there any emerging trends or unique characteristics that stand out to you?
I think it's really beautiful that Irish artists who don't do the usual "radio friendly" are getting recognised and appreciated. The industry was dominated by a certain genre for a long time so it feels like a breate of fresh air seeing the open mindedness of people.
It feels really good to have a space for you among your peers no matter what genre or whether you're a band or solo artist.
Can you walk us through the creative process when writing and composing music?
It honestly changes every time I'm not gonna lie. At the moment I like to do lyrics first and follow the theme of the lyrics so when I open my laptop and start a session I can build a home for the emotion I'm creating. Sometimes it's the other way around though lol.
Every so often it just happens all at once, like I'll write lyrics as I write a drum groove idk. If I work with a producer and we make something from scratch I like to write right there and then I love the spontaneity.
How Has your sound evolved since your first release, and what have you learned about yourself as an artist along the way?
I've changed a lot as an artist since my first release. My sound has evolved as I have. I learned I don't need to stick to one genre so I don't! I'm always finding ways to challenge myself for instance I adore playing around with structures of songs it feels like a puzzle sometimes how can I connect all this?
Diversity is an important aspect of any music scene. How do you think your music contributes to the diversity of the Irish music scene?
I think being queer/a woman in any industry is a battle. I hope someday young people can relate to my words who have the same dreams and goals as I. I like to speak openly on mental health through my music so I hope there's someone who can find comfort in that. It's been hard finding a space here in the Irish music scene as a female electronic artist, but I won't stop even if I'm annoying lol, everyone deserves a warm welcome into any space.
I'm so lucky to be as privileged as I am as a white woman so I can't speak on behalf of other female/non binary artists, any ones experience will never be the same. I just hope we keep moving forward and lift each other up because it's a lonely industry.
As an Irish artist, what advice have you got for other artists trying to navigate the industry and find their unique voice?
Just do it. See who's in your area like musicians/producers/artists/bands and connect! Go to gigs, talk to those playing or attending. I find meeting artists for a songwriting session or jam session can be such a mood booster/open up your mind.
What can listeners expect from you in the near future? any upcoming releases, collabs or projects you're excited about?
Yasss, I'm releasing my Debut EP in the new year!!
I am going to finish off by asking you, if you could collaborate with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Aaaaahhhh such a hard question. Probably Caroline Polachek, she has such a beautifully weird mind. She has amazing artistry and her voice is my comfort.
