From Kitchen Tables to Chart Tops: Kingfishr’s Halcyon Story

The Secrets Behind the Sound of Ireland’s Biggest Album

If 2025 taught us anything about Irish music, it's that honesy songwriting still moves people. In a year where international pop artists dominated global streaming platforms, one of our own trios steeped in indie folk and Irish tradition, Kingfishr, managed to do something pretty remarkable, their debut album Halcyon reached number one in Ireland and held its position through the end of the year, finishing as the Christmas number one alongside their breakout single Killeagh.

From Pub Stages to Chart Toppers

Kingfishr are three friends, Eddie Keogh, Eoghan "McGoo" McGrath, and Eoin "Fitz" Fitzgibbon, who met while studying in Limerick and began writing songs around a kitchen table. Their sound mixes traditional Irish influences with modern indie-pop songwriting, creating music that feels familiar without sounding dated.

What began with street performances and small venues quickly grew into something much bigger. Over the past year, the band moved from grassroots shows to sold out headline performances, connecting not only with Irish audiences but with listeners further afield. Closing out 2025 with two sold out nights at Dublin’s 3Arena marked a clear milestone in their rise.

Killeagh, The Song Created for Everyone

The success of Halcyon cannot be separated from Killeagh. Originally written as a tribute to Fitzgibbon’s GAA hurling background in East Cork, the track started as a local anthem before rapidly finding a wider audience. What followed was unexpected, Killeagh climbed to number one on the Irish Singles Chart, remained there for several weeks, and became the most streamed Irish song of the year. It has since achieved multi-platinum status in Ireland.

The song’s impact comes from more than its strong melody. Killeagh became a shared experience, heard at matches, parties, long drives, and across social media. Its straightforward chorus and Celtic undertones helped it stand out in a crowded digital landscape, giving it a sense of place that listeners connected with, no matter where they were from.

A Story of Roots and Reach

Released on August 22, Halcyon reflects the same balance between local roots and wider appeal. Songs like Diamonds & Roses, Eyes Don’t Lie, and Shot In The Dark pair thoughtful lyrics with melodies designed for live crowds as much as personal listening. The album feels carefully made but never overproduced, equally suited to quiet moments or open roads across the country.

The response to Halcyon extended beyond Ireland. The album entered the UK top 10, and Kingfishr’s live schedule filled quickly across Ireland, the UK, and Europe. Looking ahead, international touring is already confirmed for 2026, including the band’s first shows in Australia.

The Next Chapter

As 2025 comes to a close, Kingfishr show no signs of slowing down. With continued touring, growing international audiences, and Halcyon still dominating Irish playlists, the band’s year stands as one of the most notable success stories in recent Irish music.

For Secrets Behind the Sound, this story goes beyond chart results. It’s a reminder that when music is rooted in honesty and shared experience, it can define moments, places, and even an entire year.ore than a number one. It can make it part of the soundtrack of a year.
